Will It Fit?
Most furniture problems are fit problems — and they're avoidable. Five minutes with a tape measure saves a return.
1. Measure the room
- Measure the wall or floor area where the piece will go, and mark it with painter's tape.
- Leave walking room: about 30–36 inches for main paths, 14–18 inches between a sofa and coffee table, and 36 inches behind dining chairs.
- Check window sills, vents, outlets, radiators and door swings.
2. Measure the route in
- Measure the width and height of every door, hallway, stairwell and elevator the piece must pass through, plus any tight turns and low ceilings or light fixtures.
- For stairs, measure the ceiling height above the stairs and any landing where the piece must turn.
- Compare these to the boxed dimensions, not just the assembled dimensions — the box is often bigger.
3. Compare with the listing
- Check width, depth, height, and diagonal depth for sofas and chairs.
- Check whether legs are removable and whether sectionals arrive in separate pieces.
- If a measurement isn't listed, email us before you order and we'll ask the manufacturer.
